Hexham High Street Heritage Action Zone

Revitalising Hexham's historic town centre into a more attractive, engaging, and vibrant place to live, work, invest and visit.

Hexham is an ancient and attractive market town, with a prominent abbey dating to AD 674 which is mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. The Heritage Action Zone is located on the gently-curving medieval streets of Priestpottle, Cattle Market and Battle Hill, historically the town's thriving centre of trade.

Many of the town centre buildings are vacant and have a run-down appearance, and significant repair work is required to the structure and outside of historic buildings. The south of the town centre has lost its department store and the former bus station has long been disused.

How the Hexham High Street Heritage Action Zone will help

Hexham is a vital focus for economic activity and community life across the Tyne Valley, and the Heritage Action Zone aims to boost economic growth. The programme intends to build on existing strengths including a strong appetite for independent food shops and markets, a strong local culture scene, and high levels of enthusiasm from local community organisations.
