Huddersfield High Street Heritage Action Zone
Breathing new life into Huddersfield's fine Victorian heritage.
The area around St George's Square in Huddersfield boasts a wealth of impressive Victorian architecture. Nearly all of the buildings are listed including the George Hotel, listed at Grade II* and renowned as the birthplace of rugby league. Adjacent is the Huddersfield Railway station, a Grade I listed building described by John Betjeman as “the most splendid station facade in England”.
Huddersfield town centre has seen decline in footfall and the number of vacant shops is increasing every year. Many of the historic buildings in St George's Square are empty or underused and falling into disrepair.
How the Huddersfield High Street Heritage Action Zone will help
By bringing vacant and underused buildings back into to use, the Heritage Action Zone will breathe new life into St George's Square and encourage local people and visitors to spend more time in Huddersfield's town centre.
