Hull Whitefriargate High Street Heritage Action Zone

Reclaiming one of Hull's oldest and historically important streets as an attractive family-friendly destination.

Whitefriargate is one of the most historic streets in Hull and boasts 33 listed buildings. In 1642, King Charles I was refused entry to the town at Beverley Gate at the west end of the street, an act – it's argued – that started the English Civil War.

Whitefriargate has lost several national retail outlets in recent years. People are using the street less as a destination and more as a link to the city’s historic Old Town.

How the Hull High Streets High Street Heritage Action Zone will help

The Heritage Action Zone will help to re-position Whitefriargate as a family-friendly destination, offering a range of leisure activities and food outlets. It will introduce more residential accommodation into vacant upper floor space while new lighting and interpretation will improve the appearance of the street.
