Selby High Street Heritage Action Zone
Capitalising on Selby's extensive heritage to re-energise its town centre.
Selby's town centre is stuffed full of historic buildings which variously reflect its past importance as a centre for shipbuilding, trade, agriculture and mining. At its heart is the Grade I-listed Norman Abbey, which still survives today. The town is now a popular commuter town with a fast rail link to Leeds.
Although Selby has a growing commuter population, the town centre is in decline as it is failing to attract its newer residents. Despite the wealth of heritage, this is not immediately apparent to visitors and local people. The history and character of the town centre needs to be enhanced and better presented to draw local people and visitors and support the town's growth.
How the Selby High Street Heritage Action Zone will help
The High Street Heritage Action Zone will fund projects to develop, enhance and celebrate parts of the town centre's historic environment will help make it more attractive for locals to use, particularly to younger people.
