Applications for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects
Large scale projects, known as nationally significant infrastructure projects - for example power stations, railways, harbours and wind farms - are dealt with by a separate process from normal developments.
The reason for this is to streamline decision-making, so that it is fairer and faster for local communities and developers alike.
The Secretary of States makes decisions on applications and they are processed by the Planning Inspectorate.
Before an application is submitted, the applicant must have carried out pre-application work. This involves consulting with statutory consultees as to the possible impact of the development, including considering the impact on the historic environment.
