Former Parish School, Etherley, Durham

This parish school in Church Street dates from 1833. It was built in a Tudor style and extended in 1869. It was paid for by Henry Stobart who was a coalowner. Before the 1870 Education Act schools were built either by church societies, charities, by wealthy landowners or by industrialists as in this case. When the building was no longer used as a school it became the Village Hall.
