Former School, Ireshopeburn, Durham

This school was built in 1854, for W. Beaumont, M.P. The inscription stone states he was 'aided by subscriptions from his agents, miners and others for the education of all religious denominations'. Before the 1870 Education Act most schools were built for either the Church of England or the Nonconformist churches. Some schools were provided by wealthy people and by money raised by subscriptions, as in this case. It was rare for such schools not to be based on one religious denomination. The building has since been used as a public house and restaurant.
