Description

The collection comprises thirteen black and white 35mm negatives, and corresponding prints, showing the Ilford Pumping Station, or Essex Water Company Pumping Station, during demolition. The photographs were taken in March 1984 by Raymond Cobbett, who noticed the site being demolished on his commute to Liverpool Street Station.

The pumping station originally belonged to the Essex Water Company, and was located on the bank of the River Roding in Mill Road, Ilford. It contained a triple expansion, triple ram steam water pump by Hathorn, Davey and Co Ltd of Leeds, dating from 1905.

The photographs provide good coverage of the site during demolition, and include views of the machinery, however Mr Cobbett was not able to take detailed views of the machinery due to the overall condition of the site.
