Description

The collection contains photographs, negatives, drawings and research papers relating to civil engineering projects in England conducted by Sir Alexander Gibb and Partners, civil engineers of London.

The bulk of the collection comprises photographs mounted in albums or originally in ring binders showing the progress or completion of construction of various large scale civil engineering projects. These projects include the following power stations and electricity generating stations: Skelton Grange, Blyth, Barking, Meaford, East Yelland, Littlebrook, Cliff Quay, Goldington, Blackwall Point, Bromborough, West Ham, West Thurrock, Peterborough, and Tilbury. Other photograph albums depict: Wolstanton Colliery, army camps at Swynnerton and Corsham, Pagham Harbour, Queen Anne's Lodge in London, River Thames jetty improvements at Northfleet, water utility projects in North Devon and Birkenhead, M4 motorway between Chiswick and Langley, Norwich Ring Road, and factories for the West Cumberland Industrial Development Co. Ltd in Cumbria, Patons and Baldwins in Darlington and J. Crossley in Halifax.

In addition correspondence, maps, drawings and research notes relate to Queen Anne's Lodge, a World War One defence barrage for the English Channel, the Tilmanstone Colliery to Dover Harbour ropeway, Whitechapel and Bow Railway, and the Bedford Level.

Although the collection covers the period 1829 to 1979, much of it was created between the 1920s and the 1960s. Most of the photography is black and white and most of the negatives relate to the M4 motorway photograph album. The stamps of many photographers appear on the backs of the photographs in the Collection including Stewart Bale of Liverpool and Aerofilms.

A handlist is available.
