For '100 Places'. Photographer's note: 'Single span railway bridge spanning the River Skerne in centre of Darlington. Sandstone with large central arch with curving wing walls containing smaller pedestrian arches. Designed by Ignatious Bonomi in 1824 to carry Stockton and Darlington railway over the River Skerne. This early pioneering stage of the development of the railways has world wide significance and it remains the oldest railway bridge in the world still in use.'
