This industrial recording initiative was authorised by the former RCHME Commissioners prior to merger with English Heritage in April 1999 and approved by H.G. Welfare in summer 1999. In addition, it was considered that the survey would be of assistance to the Monuments Protection Programme. The former gunpowder manufactories of Cumbria form a distinct group of seven sites and occur in the south eastern part of the county in four areas. Although there has been considerable interest and research into the Cumbrian works in recent years, there has been little formal recording of the physical remains. The project is intended to rectify this omission, and will aid the conservation management of those gunpowder works which have been designated in whole or in part as protected monuments; the inclusion of all sites irrespective of their current level of designation will also enhance our overall understanding of what was once an important local industry.
