The collection comprises 3001 35mm colour negatives documenting railway architecture, taken between 1998 and 2001 by Martin Robertson, an industrial archaeologist and railway architecture historian. Robertson was commissioned by English Heritage to survey railway architecture throughout England with a view to identifying the best examples for listing. The negatives informed this research. They include examples of railway stations, signal boxes, viaducts, tunnels, bridges, goods sheds, warehouses, ventilation shafts, memorials, and platforms, from across the country. Within the collection are images of disused stations, viaducts and tunnels, in some cases showing them just prior to renovation and conversion for alternative use.
The negatives were transferred to the Historic England Archive in 2009.
