Description
During the Second World War, the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHME) took up a temporary home at Trinity College, Cambridge, with a reduced staff. The RCHME worked closely with the National Buildings Record during the war on an extensive survey to record buildings at risk from enemy action. This was focussed on buildings in the eastern and central counties. This series of photographs was created as part of this process. On the night of 16th-17th February 1945 a fire at Trinity College destroyed many records produced by the RCHME, and it is thought that this included at least some of the output of this project. The photographs taken by the National Buildings Record were later transferred to the archive of the RCHME.
