Radiocarbon Dates
This volume presents a detailed catalogue of the radiocarbon dates funded by English Heritage between April 1988 and March 1993. In total, details of 881 determinations are provided. Only samples from sites in which English Heritage had a formal interest were eligible for dating through the Ancient Monuments Laboratory. Often samples came from archaeological excavations funded, wholly or in part, by English Heritage. Some samples were from sites excavated by the in-house archaeological team or on sites in guardianship, but many were from excavations undertaken by others with funding from the English Heritage Archaeology Commissions Programme. Many of these sites were excavated in advance of development.
This volume covers a period of transition in English archaeology when funding from developers first became widely available, following the adoption of new planning guidance in the early 1990s (PPG16 1990). Inevitably, post-excavation analysis and publication follows on from excavation, however, and so most of the sites included in this volume were excavated before the implementation of PPG16.
