A nurse giving oxygen to a patient, Guy's Hospital, Great Maze Pond, Southwark, Greater London

A nurse giving oxygen to a patient, using an oxygen cylinder and nasal tubes. This system was known as the Poulton Method. In 1936 Dr Poulton had published evidence that supplying patients with oxygen via a “nasal catheter” produced better results than placing patients in oxygen tents. The results of tests using more comfortable forked nasal tubes were also greater than those of patients who inhaled oxygen through their mouth. However, more oxygen was required when using these two methods than had previously been needed using oxygen tents, due to wastage. The apparatus was modified over the following years.
