Aerial View, Richborough Roman Fort, Sandwich, Kent

In AD 43 the Roman army landed at Richborough which was then on the coast. The port became the entry and exit point to England for Roman soldiers. The fort was built in the mid 3rd century and is now two miles from the sea. A town grew up around the fort and an amphitheatre was built in the late 3rd century. The large hollow where it stood can be seen above the fort in this view. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010). Find out more.
