An aircraft servicing hangar at Heathrow Airport, Heathrow, Greater London
Jon Laing plc built a new hangar at Heathrow Airport between 1969 and 1971. In the mid 20th century, travelling by air was far less common – it was new and expensive. As demand increased after the 1960s, larger aircraft were built so more passengers could travel further, at less cost. This new hangar was for servicing aircraft and was built so it could fit large new airbus jets. The foundations of the hangar were 75 feet (23 metres) deep, and the roof was raised over 20 metres off the ground.
