Astley Hall, Astley Park, Chorley, Lancashire
The 'Cromwell Bed' at Astley Hall, said to be where Oliver Cromwell slept after the Battle of Preston in 1648. Astley Hall was a manor house built in the early-mid 1500s by the Charnock family. It has had several restorations. In 2004 a priest's hole was discovered. The family were Roman Catholics and would have needed somewhere to hide their priest in the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1922 the house and its contents were given to Chorley Corporation by Reginald Tatton, as a memorial to the local men killed in World War I. It is now (2011) in use as Chorley's Museum and Art Gallery.
