Benwell Temple, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear
This is a reconstruction drawing of Benwell Roman Temple. It was a Temple of Antenociticus, a Roman god. It was built in c180 AD. It was built after the construction of the nearby Roman fort (AD 122-4). It was destroyed by fire in AD 196 and was not reoccupied. When it was re-discovered in 1862 they also found the base and head of a statue. The head is now in the Museum of Antiquities in Newcastle. The two taller pillars (altars) are casts of the originals which are in the same Museum. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010). Read detailed archaeological description.
