Caleb Lovejoy Almshouses, Guildford, Surrey
These almshouses are dated 1839. They were paid for with money left by Caleb Lovejoy. Lovejoy founded an almshouse charity in the 17th century. He was born in Guildford and became a wealthy merchant, partly through supplying wagons to Oliver Cromwell’s army during the civil war. His intention was to provide 'accommodation for four poor persons of good character'.
