Central Library, College Green, Bristol
The library opened in 1906 following a bequest by Vincent Stuckey Lean of £50,000. An architectural competition was organised and won by the firm of H. Percy Adams. His assistant Charles Holden designed the building. It combined the style of the Tudor abbey gatehouse nearby with a contemporary modern style. Charles Holden went on to design stations for the London underground tube network.
