Chatsworth House, Chatsworth, Derbyshire
A view looking south along the Broadwalk beside the east front of Chatsworth House. Gardeners are at work in the grounds. Chatsworth House was constructed 1687-9 by William Talman for the first Duke of Devonshire. It is thought to sit on the site, and follow the basic plan, of an earlier house for Bess of Hardwick. She married into the Cavendish family that still inhabit the estate today. Alterations and additions were made in 1756-60 by James Paine and mostly replaced 1820-40 by Jeffrey Wyatt.
