Cholmley Mansion, Whitby Abbey, Whitby, North Yorkshire
Reconstruction drawing of the Cholmley mansion banqueting hall and forecourt in 1700. The abbey was dissolved in 1539, as part of Henry VIIIs Dissolution of the monasteries, and passed to the Cholmley family. A house incorporating part of the Abbots House from Whitby Abbey was built and lived in by the Cholmley family from 1541 onwards. The banqueting hall, situated to the north of the house was built in 1672-83 and damaged following storms in 1790. This element of the building was never repaired and is now maintained as a ruin. The courtyard was excavated and restored by English Heritage in 2009.
