Covered Slip, South Yard, Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth
This slip (boat shed) dates from the 1770s. The cover (roof) dates from 1814 and was designed by Sir Robert Seppings. The slip has raked sides and a curved end with two steps. The entrance opens into the river. Covers for slips and dry docks were introduced into Naval dockyards to protect wooden ships while they were being built or repaired. Most were built between 1814 and 1821. When they were built they were the widest span roofs in Britain.
