Dorchester Abbey, Dorchester, Oxfordshire
The large abbey, now dating to the 12th century and later, showing the west tower, reconstructed in the 17th century. The first religious house was founded in 634, when St Birinus was granted Dorchester by Cynegils, King of Wessex. In 1140 it was refounded for Augustinian canons. At the dissolution almost all the buildings were demolished but the church was bought and given to the parish.
