Eliza Fernley Lifeboat Monument, Southport, Merseyside
The Eliza Fernley Lifeboat monument is in the cemetery in Duke Street. It dates from around 1888-90 and was designed by FW Johnson, architect. It commemorates 14 members of the crew of the Southport lifeboat "Eliza Fernley". The crew lost their lives on the night of 9 December 1888 (together with the crew of the St Anne's lifeboat) while attempting to rescue the crew of the German barque "Mexico". The monument has a good carved relief depicting the lifeboat and its crew caught under the crest of a mountainous wave. This tragedy is also commemorated by an obelisk on the Promenade.
