Empire Theatre, Lime Street, Liverpool, Merseyside

The theatre was built by Brier in 1924 - 5 for Moss's Empires Ltd. It was designed by W & T R Milburn in a Classical style. The carving and auditorium decorations were by E 0 Griffiths of Liverpool. It is a steel framed building clad in Portland stone on the front and brick elsewhere. It has a very wide auditorium (with balcony) designed to seat an audience of 2,450. The long rows of seats sloping up on either end were designed to give a sense of audience participation, as well as improving sight lines towards the stage. The internal decoration is in a 'Louis XVI' style. There are many curious decorative features including carved elephant caryatids.
