Flodden Memorial, Branxton, Northumberland
This monument was built in 1910 to commemorate the Battle of Flodden. It has the inscription 'Battle of Flodden 1513 TO THE DEAD OF BOTH NATIONS Erected 1910'. The Battle of Flodden Field took place on 9th September 1513 during the reign of Henry VIII. At this time England was at war with France. King James IV of Scotland decided to invade northern England in support of the French. There were several minor battle but this was the decisive battle. The English emerged victorious. After the battle 10,000 Scottish victims lay dead on the battle field. These included twelve earls, fifteen lords, many clan chiefs, an archbishop and above all King James himself. It is said that every great family in Scotland mourned the loss of someone at the Battle of Flodden.
