Former offices of Dorman Long, Zetland Road, Middlesbrough
These offices date from 1881/91 and were designed by the well known architect, Philip Webb, in an Arts and Crafts classical style. They are regarded as the most important building in the town because of their architecture. They were built for Bell Brothers who ran an ironworks. They later belonged to one of the most important firms in this area, Dorman Long. The company started as an iron and steel works in 1875 making ironwork for ships. Later on they specialised in the construction of bridges. They took over Bell Brothers in the late 1920s. The most famous bridge ever constructed on Teesside was Dorman Long's Sydney Harbour Bridge of 1932. This was partly modelled on the 1929 Tyne Bridge which they also built. The great example of Dorman Long's work on Teesside is the Newport Lifting Bridge.
