Former Orphan Asylum, Orphanage Road, Watford, Hertfordshire
This building was originally part of the London Orphan Asylum. It was built in 1871 by Henry Dawson and is an extensive group of institutional buildings. It was built for 5-600 orphans and 100 servants. The London Orphan Asylum was first founded in 1813. It was funded by rich supporters who donated money. It originally had orphanages in Shoreditch, Bethnal Green and Clapton. The decision to move the orphanage to Watford was made because of an outbreak of typhus in London that led to many children becoming unwell.
