Former sugar refinery, Host Street, Bristol
This sugar refinery was built in the mid 19th century. The sugar industry was important in Bristol. Bristol had over 20 such refineries in the 18th century. The port of Bristol was very involved in the slave trade and sugar was one of the items that was at the centre of this trade. Slaves worked cutting the sugar in the Caribbean. It was then sent by ship to Bristol to be refined for use in sweetening drinks and preserving food. The warehouse was partly demolished in the late 20th century and used as a clothes warehouse.
