Gloucester, Gloucestershire

This general view of Gloucester shows a large timber yard in the foreground. A barge can be seen behind the timber yard and railway carriages in the middle of it. It appears that it could be accessed by canal or railway. The tower of Gloucester Cathedral is in the middle background. The yard may have belonged to Nicks and Company. They imported timber from Canada, Scandinavia and the Baltic. It was caried by ships to Sharpness and then by canal barge to Gloucester The company was based at Canada wharf. The Buchanan family who had a coal company were also partners in this business.
