Guildford Institute and Former Royal Arms Temperance Hotel, Guildford, Surrey
This hotel was built in 1880 for the Reverend Francis Paynter of Stoke. A Literary and Scientific Institute was added in 1892. It was in an exact copy of the hotel style. The Guildford Institute of the University of Surrey was originally called the Guildford and Working Men's Institute. They formed the Guildford Mechanics Institution in March 1834. It was for the promotion of useful knowledge among the working classes. It was an unusual foundation for the South of England at that time. The 1835 Literary and Scientific Institution merged with the Mechanics Institution in to form the Institute. This originally occupied the upper floors of the Temperance Hotel before building their own premises in 1892.
