Hartshill Insitute, Hartshill, Stoke on Trent

This building was once the Hartshill Institute. It was built in 1859. The Victorians set up many institutes like this one. They provided places where working men could 'better' themselves by learning reading, writing, maths and other subjects. They were like voluntary schools for adults. It is important to remember that most working men at this time would have had no formal education as children.
