Haughmond Abbey, Haughmond, Shropshire

These are the ruins of the Abbey of St John the Evangelist. The abbey began as a small religious community towards the end of the 11th century. In 1135 it attracted the patronage of William Fitzalan of Clun, who established a house of Augustinian canons. Following Dissolution in 1539, the site was granted to Sir Edward Littleton. He sold it to Sir Rowland Hill. It then passed to the Barker family in 1548. The Barkers demolished the church and dormitory range and converted other parts of it in to a private mansion. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
