Hopping Hill Terraces, Shaw Lane, Belper, Derbyshire
This block of back to back terraced housing lies on a steep hillside at right angles to Shaw Lane. One side is East Terrace and the other side West Terrace. The houses in East Terrace are 3 storeys high - in West Terrace 2 storeys. The houses are built from stone with a slate roof and brick chimneys. Each pair of houses occupies an area of only 20 ft x 21 ft. There is an ingenious interlocking of the cellars of every other house on each side. The cellars are dug into the hillside. The terraces were built between 1800 and 1819 by the Strutts for their workers.
