Hopton Castle, Hopton Castle, Shropshire

The date of this castle is unclear. It was probably built in the late 12th to 14th century. All that remains is a ruined keep on top of a ditched mound. The remains of the keep have been dated to the 12th and 14th century by their architectural style. The castle seems to have seen no action until 1644, when the Royalists forced a Parliamentarian garrison to surrender. After this the garrison was slaughtered. The castle was then damaged, so that it was no longer a defence.
