Hornby Castle, Hornby with Farleton, Lancashire
The original Hornby Castle formerly stood on the present castle site. The Nevill family were associated with it from c1274. Nothing now remains of that castle. The earliest part of the present building is the central keep which Pevsner refers to as a "pele tower of the 13th century below, the early 16th century above". The castle was abandoned after the Civil War but partly rebuilt and added to in the early 18th century. Between 1849-52, the 18th century work was replaced by the present two storied Gothic style building with flanking battlemented wings.
