Horse Guards lies between 2 major London streets; Whitehall and Horse Guards Parade. The photograph shows the West Front, facing Horse Guards Parade. It dates from 1750-1759 and combined an army barracks with offices for the Secretary at War. It was designed by William Kent and built by John Vardy and William Robinson, of the Office of Works. It is built from Portland stone in a Palladian style. The main windows are Venetian. The large open space in front of the building is used for ceremonial occasions such as the Queen's Birthday parade.
