Hovercraft in Western Docks, Dover, Kent
Sir Christopher Cockrell devised the hovercraft in 1950 - although the idea was first considered in the Netherlands in 1875. The first ever hovercraft service was launched in 1968. By 1972 there were regular links via hovercraft between South-East England and North-East France.
