Howden Minster, Howden, East Riding of Yorkshire
This was a collegiate church that was founded in 1267. It was administered by a "college" of priests known as canons. They did not belong to a specific monastic order. A grammar school was run inside the nave of the church from at least 1393. In 1548 Henry VIII dissolved the Collegiate churches, including Howden. The townspeople kept the nave as their parish church but the chancel, choir and chapter house were allowed to become ruins. There is evidence that the school continued - in 1564 and 1566 boys were still being sent to university. The church was restored in 1840 and 1850.
