India Mill, Bolton Road, Darwen, Lancashire
This cotton spinning mill was built in 1867 for Shorrock Brothers & Co. The chimney was the tallest and most expensive in the country when it was completed. It was opened in May 1868 by the Marquis of Hartington. However Shorrock Brothers & Co were ruined shortly after as a result of the Cotton Famine. The famine was due to the American Civil War which prevented raw cotton being imported to Britain.
