Lacock Abbey, Lacock, Wiltshire
This country house dates from the mid 16th century. It was built from the cloisters of the Augustinian nunnery founded in 1229 and sold to Sir W. Sharington at the Dissolution in 1540. The original cloisters dated from the 13th to 15th centuries. The church was destroyed soon after the Dissolution. Between 1828-30 the south front had alterations made in Gothic revival style for W.H. Fox-Talbot. W.H. Fox-Talbot (1800-77) was a pioneer of photography. He spent his life in the house and made his first photographic experiments here. The house is now (2011) in the care of the National Trust who also have a Fox Talbot museum nearby.
