Main Street, Rockingham, Northamptonshire
A view looking south-east up Main Street showing the picturesque 18th century thatched cottages built from local ironstone and limestone. The Market Cross probably dates from the 14th century. A metal plaque has the inscription "Rebuilt 1894 on the remains of the old market cross of the village she loved so well. In memory of Laura Maria Watson who died March 21 1893". There are two horse-drawn carriages filled with people. Tourism became popular in the Victorian period. These people may have been visiting nearby Rockingham Castle on an organised outing. Some of the men are wearing straw 'boater' hats that were the fashion for young men when they were not at work.
