Mermaid Hotel, Rye, East Sussex

A view from the rear of the Mermaid Hotel. It was built as a high class hostelry circa 1530. In circa 1570 the kitchen was reconstructed together with a first floor room. About ten years later a parlour range was added, completing the courtyard. Due to the towns decline no more major alterations were made. In the 18th and 19th centuries the building was divided into cottages before becoming a hotel again.
