Middleham Castle, Middleham, North Yorkshire
A view of Middleham Castle and buildings in the south of the village, seen from fields to the south. The tower keep was begun in the 1170s by Ralph FitzRanulph. From 1270 the castle belonged to the Nevill family of Raby. It was forfeited to the Crown in 1471. Edward IV then gave it to his brother Richard of Gloucester, later Richard III. Richard was married to Anne Nevill. Their only child, Edward, was born here in 1473. After Richard's death, Middleham passed to Henry VII and remained Crown property until 1604. It was then given by James I to Sir Henry Lindley. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2011).
