Mortimers Cross Water Mill, Mortimers Cross, Herefordshire
There has probably been a mill at Mortimer's Cross since the 15th century. An account of the Battle of Mortimer's Cross in 1461 records an attack by the Lancastrians against Edward Earl of March's troops who retreated over a weir to the north of the cross-roads. A weir is a good clue that a mill was nearby. The present mill building dates from around 1760. It was originally part of the Croft Castle Estate. It was owned by the Kevill-Davies family between 1785 and 1923. It produced paper until at least 1830. It was converted to a grain mill around 1870 and continued grinding animal feed commercially until the 1940s. It is now (2011) in the care of English Heritage.
