Mount Batten Tower, Mount Batten Point, Plymstock, Plymouth
This coastal defence tower is set at the top of a cliff. It was built in the 1660s from Plymouth limestone rubble on the site of an earlier battery. It was put up as part of the post Civil War defences of Plymouth Sound. It is thought to be named after Captain Batten who was Governor of Plymouth during the Civil War. It is a round tower. It originally had a basement store and a heated room on each floor above. There was a stone staircase within the thickness of the wall. There was a small store at the top of the stairs and a latrine set on the battlements.
