Numbers 2-4 Foss Street, Dartmouth, Devon
Foss Street follows the line of a medieval dyke which dammed a tidal creek and included a tidal mill. The mill pool was filled in and developed around 1820-30. Most of the houses in the street date from the early 19th century. However some houses were built along the Foss from the 17th century onwards. This house, with its elaborate wooden windows and jettied upper floors, was one of Dartmouth's finest 17th century merchant's houses. It was destroyed in a bombing raid in 1943.
