Old Town Hall, Market Place, Middlesbrough
The original Town Hall dates from 1846 and was designed by W.L. Moffat (Doncaster). It was built in a simple Italianate style. It was replaced with a much larger building in the 1880s as the population of Middlesbrough increased more rapidly than any other town in England. The building was used as a public library and community centre but stood empty and neglected for some time. In 2009 it was refurbished and reopened as a performance space.
